Two lawyers are doing their part to combat the spread of anti-Semitic rhetoric about Israel’s war against the terror organization Hamas in Gaza, and are seeking to brand a controversial slogan that has become a mantra of the hate-hating left. jews
In two separate filings, American Jewish individuals are seeking federally protected trademark status for “from the river to the sea, Palestine shall be free,” a phrase widely interpreted as a call for the eradication of Israel as a country and the extermination of Israeli Jews.
The slogan has been bandied about in “ceasefire” demonstrations that have served as a magnet for anti-Semites and has also been promoted by sitting Democratic members of the US Congress such as Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich. ) despite its genocidal implications.
“One trademark, filed by Joel Ackerman of New Jersey, purports to cover the entire chant ‘From the River to the Sea, Palestine Will Be Free,’ while the second trademark by Oron Rosenkrantz of Pennsylvania purports to cover only the first part of the phrase,” Fox Business reported.
Screenshots have been posted on X, but the trademarks have not yet been issued, as a reader’s note reads: “Although the trademark application is real, the trademark is still “in pending examination”. In other words, not granted or valid”.

If the requests are approved, some warn they could backfire.
“It could backfire, and eventually all kinds of people who we don’t want to wear hats and shirts with that slogan will buy the products and use them, and it will spread around the world,” a partner at the law firm “specializing in trademarks registered”. and intellectual property”, he said the Jerusalem Post.
Lihi Katzenelson added that the chances of the two men being trademarked “are not that good” and that “since it only applies to hats and shirts, stopping its use on other services and goods would be very difficult.”
“I guess the applicants, when they applied, assumed it would get a lot of publicity, which has already happened. I’m not sure they assumed that this slogan would eventually be registered to them,” he said.
“I would be surprised if they would get that trademark, regardless of who they are or why they want it,” intellectual property attorney Fred Tecce told Fox Business, noting there are “a number of significant barriers” to getting the trademark .
“It takes months (at least) to register a trademark,” Tecce said in an email, according to the outlet. “Even if the examining attorney at the trademark office (the person responsible for seeing if you can be granted a trademark) decides that you are entitled to the trademark, it is published for what is called an ‘opposition'” .
“As I said earlier this week, ‘decolonization’, ‘from the river to the sea’ and similar euphemisms necessarily imply genocide,” X owner Elon Musk wrote on the platform last week. “Clear calls to extreme violence are against our terms of service and will result in suspension.”

In a rare bipartisan rebuke, Rep. Tlaib was recently censured by her House colleagues for using the incendiary slogan.
“Everybody talks about that slogan,” Katzenelson said. The decision to try to mark it “may not serve the purpose of the applicants”.
