President Joe Biden’s asylum policies have forced migrants to stay in US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) facilities far longer than allowed. Migrants should not be held for more than 72 hours under US policy, but many are held in facilities on the US southern border for up to 30 days.
There has been, so far, no sign of Congresswoman Alexandra Ocasio-Cortes, who famous cried in front of a fence leading to a parking lot near a migrant detention center in 2019.
About 1,000 of the 10,000 migrants recently at CBP facilities were there for at least 10 days, despite the Department of Homeland Security setting up new facilities, including a new tent complex to accommodate the increased number of migrants. Even a Homeland Security official he said CNN,”[w]We’re not made to do that.”
Border officials argue that a combination of new policies and limited resources are the main catalysts for the delays. The Biden regime instituted policies earlier this year aimed at “fast-tracking” the asylum process, including requiring migrants to remain in CBP custody for theirs “credible fear interviews.” However, the requirement to remain in custody throughout, along with Biden allowing it approximately 43,000 migrants to cross the border every month, has meant that the ability to make decisions has slowed down dramatically.
“At times, certain circumstances, which could include the need to move individuals laterally due to overcrowding, could extend the amount of time individuals spend in CBP custody,” a CBP spokesperson announced after the news .
The southern border of the US was subject to a “invasion” after former President Donald Trump’s pandemic policy, known as Title 42it expired in May of this year.
