Former President Donald Trump asked on Thursday to delay his sentencing in New York until after the November election.
Trump's lawyers wrote in a letter to Judge Juan Merchan that “there is no basis to continue to rush” the case, noting that the current sentencing date of Sept. 18 will occur after early voting begins. Pushing back the date would “reduce, if not eliminate, issues related to the integrity of any future proceedings,” Trump's lawyers argued.
“Putting aside bare goals of election interference, there is no valid countervailing reason for the Court to keep the current ruling date on the calendar,” Trump's lawyers wrote.
His lawyers argued that the postponement of the date is “necessary to allow President Trump adequate time to evaluate and pursue his state and federal appeal options” if Merchan rejects Trump's motion to throw out the verdict of jury based on the Supreme Court's July ruling on presidential immunity. Merchan said he would rule on the motion on Sept. 16.
