Traveller’s tombstone removed, not yet replaced: The W&L Spectator

-

The Redoubt of the Generals (TGR), a non-profit alumni group, also shared the photo in a email extract to his more than 12,000 followers.

“President Dudley is determined to remove all references to Robert E. Lee from the W&L campus,” TGR began. “And now that Lee has been almost completely wiped out, Dudley is going after Traveller.”

After citing a list of 11 actions that TGR claims “Dudley has orchestrated in his effort to purge W&L of any association with Lee[,]” The Redoubt concludes, “I should at least have the decency to be honest about it. Instead, it has conducted a mostly covert offensive, rarely inviting input from alumni or other interested parties.”

And while many in the W&L community were dismayed by the decision, not everyone cared to hear about it.

Arguments erupted yesterday and later today the spectator shared his article in a GroupMe chat of students from various degrees.

“[M]Personally, one student said, I couldn’t care less about the dead horse of a man who is probably upset in his grave because students like me attend his institution.[.]”

Another student posted: “NONE OF US CARES TO TALK ABOUT IT WHERE PEOPLE CARE[.]”

As for the apples, workers removed them from the pit this morning to an undisclosed location.
