Tottenham have successfully completed a £65m deal with Bournemouth to sign striker Dominic Solanke. The deal stipulates an initial payment of £55m, with a further £10m potentially later in bonuses. Solanke, who scored 19 Premier League goals last season, has committed to a six-year contract with Spurs, which runs until 2030. He is expected to be present for Tottenham's pre-season friendly against Bayern Munich this Saturday.
Solanke's contract with Bournemouth included a £65m release clause which would be triggered if a major Premier League club expressed an interest in him. The 26-year-old striker was absent from Bournemouth's pre-season friendly with Rayo Vallecano last weekend with a foot injury.
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has previously highlighted the team's need for another centre-forward. Postecoglou's strategy requires a certain set of physical and technical skills from his forwards, and Solanke fits the bill. The manager has acknowledged that the forward position is currently the thinnest in the squad, making it a priority for recruitment.
The acquisition of Solanke could be a game changer for Tottenham. The team has been in need of a centre-forward since the departure of Harry Kane last summer. While Richarlison and Heung-Min Son have filled the role, with the other occupying the left wing, Son is best from the side, and Richarlison's form and fitness have been inconsistent.
With Tottenham back in European competition and aiming for a top finish, a high-quality alternative was needed. Solanke, who scored 19 goals for Bournemouth last season and is now entering his prime with 26, looks to be the perfect fit. He is a good finisher, with 17 of his goals last season coming from inside the box. Given Tottenham ranked fourth in the Premier League for crosses per game in 2023/24, Solanke could be the key to completing those moves.
