Tim Scott's quick one-line response to Trump's awkward question gets mixed reviews

-

Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) was in New Hampshire as Donald Trump celebrated his victory in the Republican primary over his last remaining challenger, Nikki Haley, and the senator dropped a line that drew applause from crowd after Trump suggested he “must really hate” Haley.

“We're going to South Carolina, where we've done very well, where I've done well. We have a great governor and lieutenant governor, great everything because almost all of them have supported me,” Trump said, continuing the practice of considering that all who support him are great, while condemning all who do not.

“Two great senators, which is difficult,” he continued. “I mean, you never thought she'd name you, Tim?”

Trump was talking about then-Gov. Haley asked Scott, who was behind him on stage.

After acknowledging that Scott had just endorsed him, the former president said, “You really have to hate him.”

“No, it's a shame. It's a shame,” he added, while the audience laughed.

At this point, Scott stepped up to the microphone, prompting Trump to mischievously say, “Uh oh!

“I just love you!” the Republican senator said to amusement from the crowd.

“That's why he's a great politician,” Trump said appreciatively.

The feel-good moment played well in a room full of Trump supporters, but it didn't go over so well on social media.

Here's a small sampling of some of the responses to X's story:
