Deputy Police Chief Wyatt Martin detailed the sequence of events during a press conference, confirming the resident's claim of acting in self-defense. The resident, who promptly surrendered to police upon their arrival, stated that he had been confronted by intruders in his apartment and that he resorted to using a firearm in response to the threat they posed.
Although authorities had not released the identities of the dead people at the time of the briefing, Martin indicated that there was no apparent prior connection established between the resident and the intruders. The investigation was continuing to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal altercation, while police examined the scene to verify.
Despite the resident's claim of self-defense, Martin stressed that the incident would be treated with the same scrutiny and protocol as any other fatal shooting investigation. Previous police responses to the same apartment were cited, hinting at possible prior incidents that may shed light on the complexities surrounding the case.
