/ South Korea also has the lowest birth rate in the OECD. It seems reasonable to assume that this is partly due to the breakdown of gender relations because virtually all births are legitimate and the decline in marriage closely follows the decline in fertility. archive.is/rCGFD

/ South Korean men are increasingly opposed to feminism: cnn.com/2019/09/21/asi…

/ There seems to be a growing politics between young men and women, with the most recent elections often referred to in the Western press as “incel elections”. english.hani.co.kr/arti/english_e…

/ Korea has a lot of a stereotype for gaming, but it doesn't seem to stand out much when looking at the data: infographicsarchive.com/countries-rank…
/ Koreans are stereotyped as spending a lot of time in school, but they don't seem to be extreme in this regard either. In 2020 they had an average of 13.7 years of schooling, the same as Ireland. In addition, at the age of 25-65 they still had the largest degree difference in favor of men. .oecd-library.org/sites/34680dd5…image
/ Some people seem to think that Korea has a pretty strong feminist movement, but I didn't find that to be the case. South Korea is less feminist than average. ipsos.com/sites/default/…
image
/ It also has one of the highest percentages of people who say that men are more capable than women on average. image
/ Statistics on feminism in Korea from Wikipedia. image
/ It seems that women in America (and probably most other western countries) are more supportive of feminism. pewresearch.org/short-reads/20…
image
/ Korea seems to have 19% fewer women in parliament than most other western countries, so if there is a feminist movement it doesn't seem very successful. image
/ Now I haven't been able to find very good data on the age gender gap in Korea, but this chart from Statista makes it look like it's considerably smaller when people are of reproductive age. statistica.com/statistics/962…

/ Now one thing that can slow down young people's careers is mandatory military service that keeps them out of the workplace for 18-24 months. pulitzercenter.org/stories/real-r…
image
/ My impression is that Korea gives a lot of status based on age. So it's possible that the gerontocracy is keeping the youth down. Coincidentally, Korea has the highest percentage of people who say there is a lot of tension between the young and the old. image
/ As an aside, Koreans have a good stance on all these issues, even the one about the tension between different races, so maybe this should be taken with a grain of salt.

27. Having an excess of men is obviously bad for men's dating prospects, but having a bunch of sexually frustrated men around isn't good for women either. US states with more males appear to have higher rape rates: psychologytoday.com/intl/blog/hive…
/ It seems like Korean women are treated pretty badly. In this study, 80% reported being sexually harassed in the workplace, and most men admitted to being violent with their partner in the surveys. eastasiaforum.org/2022/12/09/sou…

/ Looking at journalists' interviews with Koreans, fear of men seems to be one of the reasons why women don't date. I'm sure the extreme violence is low, but the average young Korean girl is probably dealing with a lot of sexually resentful men. pulitzercenter.org/stories/real-r…
image

/ So my general theory about the messed up gender relations in Korea is that it's a result of this bubble of over-men that makes men more resentful and women stop dating.

/ It almost seems like Korea is sexist enough to make women hate men, but still free enough not to force women to marry and have children with a very low birth rate. Conscription may also play a role, but IDK to what extent this is all conjecture and should be taken with a grain of salt.

/ If my theory is correct, the sex ratio should improve as the excess of men ages past the maximum age of marriage. We should also see gender relations in other Asian countries worsen as their excess of males catches up.

/ I'm not Korean, never have been, and don't speak any Korean except for the anynyeong I learned on Arrested Development. If you're Korean (or anyone else) and think I've made a mistake, please let me know! This was just a cursory look at the problem anyway…
