The Veterans Affairs supervisor ordered the “Not Today Satan” plaque removed from the desk

-

An unnamed Department of Veterans Affairs supervisor was reportedly forced to remove a “not today, Satan, not today” sign from his desk due to a complaint.

The complaint was filed by the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) on behalf of a non-theistic, honorably discharged Air Force veteran who works under the supervisor.

According to email now public submitted by the employee to the MRFF, the employee became offended when, during a meeting with the supervisor, he noticed the “not today, Satan, not today” sign.

“In what was already a hostile situation with my immediate supervisor for previous non-religious reasons, my situation became even worse when he invited me into his office for a discussion,” the email says.

“That's where I first realized I had a 'Not today, Satan.' Not today.' sign sitting on top of his desk for all to see. The sign itself was placed in such a way that it physically addressed anyone sitting in the guest chair in front of his desk,” the email continues.

“As an honorably discharged veteran who subscribes to many non-theistic teachings (including Satanist), my previously hostile situation with my immediate supervisor was heightened to the max. Especially after hearing from other co-workers that he actually registered in his office for at least the past year without any attention from upper management,” the email concludes.

The employee then sent a “passionate and deeply emotional” email to the supervisor complaining about the sign. This resulted in upper management emailing the employee to request a meeting which the employee perceived as a threat.

The employee then contacted MRFF, contacted attorney Michael Weinstein and told him about the “grotesque Christian supremacist sign” that I wanted to remove.

After contacting the MRFF, the employee informed upper management that they were in contact with Weinstein and that Weinstein would be attending the meeting.

“After accepting the invitation to the senior management meeting, Mikey personally accompanied me to my union on the phone for its duration,” the email says.

“After Mikey's powerful introduction and remarks, it was with great joy and excitement that we learned from her, 'Not today, Satan.' Not today.' The sign was immediately removed without any resistance from my hostile Christian supervisor,” the email continues.

“VBA senior management is also considering providing more cultural awareness training, moving me to a new supervisor, and sending an apology email to my entire VBA team,” the email concludes.

talking with The Christian Post Weinstein later said the poster was removed even before the meeting he attended.

He also described the sign as “a harmful example of trying to express a particular religious view in a situation where it was simply not justified.”

When asked for a rebuttal to the argument that Satanism should not be treated like other religions, Weinstein disagreed, arguing that critics of Satanism “probably don't really understand the full nature of Satanism.”

“It's not slaughtering children at midnight with knives,” he alleged. “Remember that, from our perspective, we don't look at what is good and bad. We look at what's legal and what's not.”

“There are thousands of different gods. Our republic is meant to be a secular democratic republic; that's how we do it in this country. We don't look at whether Satan is evil, or Jesus is evil, or Vishnu is evil, or Buddha or Yahweh. we fix on the time, the place and the way of an expression of a tradition of faith or non-religious”, he continued.

“We live in a very polarized country. We don't overcomplicate ourselves either. It seems we are in a digital country: MAGA or no MAGA. We know on which side Christian nationalism is centered. And in this case, the offending immediate supervisor removed him from his desk after being notified, following complaints, by the higher-ranking supervisor,” he continued.

“I ask people all the time [to] Remember, we are not a Christian nation, we are not a Jewish nation, we are not an Islamic nation. We are a secular democratic republic. And that's why we have a separation of church and state. Everything is time, place and manner”, he concluded.
