The Vatican has finally broken its silence on the mockingly eyebrow-raising drag performance reimagined Leonardo da Vinci's famous 'The Last Supper' painting at the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics last week.

During the July 26 show, the classic biblical scene of Jesus Christ and his disciples sharing a final meal before his crucifixion was surprisingly replaced by drag queens, a transgender model and a singer dressed as the god Dionysus Greek of wine and pleasure.

In a strange press release on the evening of the weekend, the Holy See expressed its dismay at the performance, highlighting the lack of respect it showed towards others.

“The Holy See was saddened by certain scenes at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris and cannot help but join the voices raised in recent days to deplore the offense done to many Christians and believers in other religions,” says the Vatican statement.

The Vatican also noted: “In a prestigious event where the whole world comes together to share common values, there should be no allusions that ridicule the religious convictions of many people. Freedom of expression, which is obviously not in question here, is limited by respect for others”.

Olympic officials initially denied that the performance was based on Da Vinci's masterpiece, but a spokesperson later confirmed that the painting was the artistic director's inspiration.

During the event, 18 performers, including three from “Drag Race France,” struck poses behind an elongated table with the Seine River and the Eiffel Tower as a backdrop.

At the center of the peculiar scene was an elaborately dressed woman wearing a huge silver headdress reminiscent of the halo often depicted in paintings of Jesus. As she flashed a smile and formed a heart with her hands, her co-stars stared into the camera before launching into a dance routine.

Numerous Christian figures, including French Catholic bishops, former President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson criticized the ceremony.

Similarly, French conservative MEP Marion Maréchal and Hungary's ambassador to the Vatican, Eduard Habsburg, also condemned the show.

After the outrage, organizers of the Paris Olympics issued an apology, saying it was “never intended to show disrespect to any religious group” but to “celebrate the tolerance of the community”.

In defense of the controversial act, one of the performers, Hugo Bardin, known for his interpretation of the drag queen Paloma, has highlighted: “We have been accused of trying to impose our vision on the world. We're not… We just want people to know that we have a place in the world and we're claiming that place,” in an interview with the Associated Press.
