A tragic collision between a passenger train and a freight train in Pardubice, Czech Republic, has left at least four dead and 27 injured, authorities say. reported Thursday. Rescue operations revealed that 380 passengers were on board the train, which was heading to the city of Kosice in eastern Slovakia and finally to Chop, Ukraine. Local news agency CTK reported that the drivers of both trains survived the collision. Transport Minister Martin Kupka said the main rail line between Prague and the eastern region of the country had to be temporarily closed for an investigation. It partially reopened nine hours later, but Czech Railways advised avoiding the route throughout the day.
The corridor where the accident occurred is crucial for Czech Railways, which expects the line to remain closed tomorrow. Kupka stressed that the cause of the crash cannot be speculated at this time, and police are currently investigating the incident for possible negligence.
Prime Minister Petr Fiala described the accident as a major tragedy and expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.
