The troubled effort by the White House and congressional allies to push through a “border security” bill that hides tens of billions of dollars in handouts to Ukraine has led some lawmakers to point the finger, one of they are Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla) .) who is one of its architects.
The Senate bill, which has not yet been publicly released, has drawn sharp criticism from conservatives, most notably Republican leader Donald J. Trump, who has urged Republicans to reject it, putting the possibility of passage – him, as President Joe Biden has promised he would. sign it
As the “border” bill slowly winds its way down the drain, the narrative that Trump and pro-American Republicans are cutting it to hurt Biden's electoral chances has been set in motion, and the talking points are leave in time for the Sunday morning political talk shows.
Lankford appeared on “Fox News Sunday” where he rejected the idea that the bill would allow 5,000 illegal aliens into the country a day, a provision that was shot down by Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and host Shannon Bream asked. he about the statements of his fellow Republican.

Lankford said the big problem is that the bill has so far been hidden away from scrutiny and suggested that critics are being swayed by what they see online.
“Right now, these Internet rumors are all people are running on,” he told Bream, denying the numbers being reported. “It would be absolutely absurd for me to accept 5,000 people a day.
“This bill is focused on getting us to zero illegal steps per day,” Lankford said. “There is no amnesty. Increase the number of border patrol agents, increase asylum officers. Increase detention beds so we can quickly detain and then deport people. It ends up being catch and release. It focuses on additional deportation flights. It changes our asylum process so that people have a fast-track asylum check with a higher standard and then go back to their country of origin.”
“It's not about letting 5,000 people through a day. This is the most misunderstood section of this proposal”, insisted the pro-amnesty senator, explaining what, according to his words, is actually in the secret legislation.
Bream later noted that many Republicans say the bill does nothing that Biden can't do by using executive orders and simply enforcing existing laws.
“So why give him this in an election year? The front page of this deal that critics say will still let a lot of people in, but he gets to do a victory lap that he's accomplished something,” he said.
“He's definitely not going to let a bunch of people in,” the senator replied. “He's focused on turning people around. It's interesting, Republicans four months ago wouldn't fund Ukraine, Israel and our southern border because we demanded policy changes.”
“So we actually locked arms together and said, 'We're not going to give you any money for this.' We want a change in the law. And now it's interesting, a few months later, when we finally go to the end, they say, 'Oh, it's a joke. I actually don't want a change in the law because it's a presidential election year,” Lankford said, accusing his fellow Republicans of crafting the bill to hurt Biden.
“The so-called border security deal that Biden is pulling out and pushing is not designed to stop illegal immigration,” Trump said. he said supporters at a rally in Nevada on Saturday. “It is designed to continue the invasion of America while sending billions of dollars to Ukraine and other countries.”
