- While President Joe Biden continues to trail former President Trump in national and battleground state polls, his poll numbers are even worse on several key issues on which he will need to gain ground to win re-election. .
- According to a recent poll, Biden is polling behind Trump on key questions about who voters benefited from most during his time in office, who they trust to handle major issues and who they believe is best suited to serve another term.
- “All of these polls point to voters already making up their minds against Biden on the merits today,” Jon McHenry, GOP polling analyst and vice president of North Star Opinion Research, told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “They just don't think it's up to the job, whether we're asking about traits like endurance and sharpness or about policies like the economy and immigration.”
As President Joe Biden continues to poll behind former President Donald Trump for a possible 2024 showdown, recent polls show he's also faring worse than the Republican on the issues that matter most to voters.
Trump has been trend ahead of Biden in key national and battleground state polls a year after a hypothetical rematch, and is currently up 3.2 points in RealClearPolitics (RCP) average. In addition, Biden is down by double digits against Trump on core presidential competition issues, including his handling of key voter issues and concerns about the Democrat's age, according to recent polling data.
“He should be worried, and Democrats in general should be worried,” Dr. Charles Bullock, an election expert and political science professor at the University of Georgia, told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “The kinds of issues that Biden is trailing Trump on seem to be the biggest issues on most people's minds.”
A Wall Street Journal poll released Dec. 9 found that only 23 percent of voters believe Biden's policies have helped them, compared with nearly 50 percent who said the same of the Trump administration.
Ron Faucheux, president of nonpartisan polling firm President Clarus Research Group, believes that statistic bodes “the worst for Biden” and told the DCNF that “this contrast is deadly” ahead of 2024.
“When Democrats decided to package their economic policies under the single label, 'Bidenomics,' it backfired and gave a name to something voters didn't like or trust,” Faucheux said.
inflation has increased under the Biden administration, which many critics attribute to the president's record spending pushed by congressional Democrats. The Inflation Reduction Act, the American Rescue Plan, the Jobs and Infrastructure Investment Act and other elements of Biden's economic agenda are responsible for giving the green light to trillions in spending.
The WSJ poll found Biden trailing Trump by double digits in whom voters trust to handle issues related to the economy and inflation, as well as immigration, crime and the wars in Ukraine and Israel.
Recent battleground state polls have confirmed national polls, finding Biden well behind Trump on key issues that voters worry about heading into the election year.
A Morning Query/Bloomberg poll published Thursday shows that in seven swing states (Arizona, Georgia, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Nevada and North Carolina), 51% of voters said the nation's economy was better off under Trump compared to 34% under Biden. The numbers were nearly identical when asked if they were better off financially now than when Trump was president.
Trump also scored double digits higher than Biden on who the electorate trusts to handle the economy, crime and immigration, which voters said were some of the most pressing issues for them before 2024, according to the Morning Consult/Bloomberg survey.
CNN/SSRS polls Michigan i Georgia released Monday indicated that Trump scored well ahead of Biden for their respective “policy decisions on important issues.”
Another battleground state survey, done of Redfield & Wilton Strategies in Arizona, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, Michigan and Pennsylvania, yielded similar results. In every state, Trump was ahead of Biden by double digits on questions of who “can get the economy going again” and “who will be tough on China.”
“Voters see the same decline for our country where we look weak. Where the economy is bad, where our enemies are taking advantage of that weakness, and you have a world where you have very bad wars in the Ukraine and now in the Middle East, and Biden can't stop it,” John McLaughlin. , CEO and partner at McLaughlin & Associates, which is working closely with the Trump campaign, told the DCNF, “The sooner the election happens, the better off voters are and the better off the country is.”
Biden is also lagging far behind Trump on who voters believe is best suited to serve another term, given that the current and former presidents are 81 and 77, respectively.
Trump led Biden 45 percent to 29 percent on the question of who is “mentally ready for the job” in the WSJ poll, and led by 34 points in “physical stamina.”
An Economist/YouGov poll released Wednesday, found that 55 percent of voters believe Biden's health and age would “severely limit his ability to get the job done,” while only 26 percent said the same of Trump.
Battleground state polls yielded similar results on the president's acuity, stamina, and physical and mental health.
Bullock argued that Trump has been successful in messaging on the issue of age, pointing to his “Sleepy Joe” nickname for Biden, which is a stark contrast between the two men.
“It's built in and it's been amplified by some things, like when Biden trips or falls or things like that,” Bullock told the DCNF. “Well, that kind of underlines, or reinforces, the message that Trump has been putting out.”

Moreover, polls suggest that Trump fares better on some personal attributes that are essential to the presidency.
The Economist/YouGov poll found that only 36 percent of voters believe Biden is a strong leader, compared with nearly 60 percent who said the same of Trump. Biden also dropped by double digits on questions about who is the strongest leader and who knows how to get things done in nearly every swing state polled by Redfield & Wilton Strategies.
“All of these polls point to voters already making up their minds against Biden on the merits today,” Jon McHenry, GOP polling analyst and vice president of North Star Opinion Research, told DCNF. “They just don't think it's up to par, whether we're asking about traits like endurance and sharpness or about policies like the economy and immigration.”
The last time a sitting president had nearly as low an approval rating in an election year as Biden did was Jimmy Carter in November 1979. seconds in Gallup. Biden's most recent job performance rating was 37% in November, which is 3 points lower than Carter's just a year earlier Lost to Republican Ronald Reagan by nearly 10 points.
“As we approach the start of 2024, this may be the last chance for Biden to question his own political assumptions and decide not to run,” Faucheux said. “This would be the lighting strike that changes everything.”
The average CPR for a 2024 national democratic i republican The primary, based on the most recent poll, shows Biden and Trump leading their respective camps with 68% and 60% support, respectively.
