The new head of the GOP's Freedom Caucus sparks internal revolt during the election year

-

One of the eight Republicans who voted to remove former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy from the role has now taken the reins of the GOP Freedom Caucus.

Rep. Bob Good, R-Va., was elected by the conservative group of lawmakers after disagreements among members. Good, who takes over for incumbent Rep. Scott Perry, R-Pennsylvania, has openly endorsed Gov. Ron DeSantis for the 2024 presidential race, creating some likely tensions with the front-runner, former President Donald Trump.

Monday's closed-door vote confirmed Good in the one-year role, even though Rep. Warren Davidson, R-Ohio, recommended otherwise.

“I am concerned that our group often relies too much on power (available primarily through narrow majorities) and too little influence with and among our peers,” Davidson told colleagues Sunday before the vote, according to axes

“I ask that we consider how best to increase our influence while retaining our power to move policy in the right direction. I strongly believe that Bob Good as chairman will hurt that goal,” he added as he announced he would be leaving the council. “I do not have an alternate nomination, but as my final fiduciary duty as a board member, I am asking you to consider electing someone else as chair of the House Freedom Caucus.”

Others did not share Davidson's assessment of Good.

“I think it's easy to find yourself in a contradiction, a self-contradiction,” said Rep. Dan Bishop, RN.C. “These categorical statements sometimes don't hold up. I don't want to get into a detailed debate with my good, very good friend Warren Davidson on this point, but obviously there have been disagreements.”

A strong dissent before it was even voted on came from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who called out Good for her support of DeSantis, who was a founding member of the House Freedom Caucus.

“Good, who ran unopposed and was recommended by the Freedom Caucus board, replaces current chairman Scott Perry, R-Pa. Others who have held the top job at the group include founding chairman Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, and former Rep. Mark Meadows, RNC, who became Trump's White House chief of staff.” reported NBC news.

The outlet noted that he also noted that the Freedom Caucus “was credited with forcing then-Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, into early retirement and then blocking McCarthy from succeeding Boehner that year as speaker.”

“Its members also clashed with then-Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and then tormented McCarthy before ousting him in early October,” NBC News continued.

MP Ralph Norman, RS.C., however, dismissed Good's negative views, saying: “It's a good debate. He would do a good job.”

“This is the democratic process, it's fine. Let the people come in, let our people decide,” he added, stating that other lawmakers could also have competed for the position.
