Paramount Pictures has released the highly anticipated trailer for “Gladiator 2,” the sequel to Ridley Scott's critically acclaimed 2000 film. The sequel stars Paul Mescal as Lucius, the eldest son of Connie Nielsen's character, and takes audiences on an epic journey that resembles the path of Maximus, the protagonist of the original film. The ensemble cast includes Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington. The film will be released in theaters just in time for Thanksgiving.
David Scarpa, who previously collaborated with Scott on projects like “Napoleon” and “All the Money in the World,” wrote the screenplay based on a story by Scarpa and Peter Craig.

A sequel to “Gladiator” has been discussed since the first film became a massive hit, grossing more than $460 million worldwide and winning five Oscars, including best picture and best actor for Russell Crowe. Initially, ideas were explored that would have deepened the journey beyond Maximus. However, the sequel did not materialize until the last few years when Scott decided to reveal the history of Lucius.
Once again set in ancient Rome, “Gladiator 2” takes place years after Lucius witnessed the death of Maximus at the hands of his uncle and was sent away. With no memory of his past, Lucius is cast into the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the tyrannical emperors who rule with an iron fist. Fueled by anger and driven by the future of the Empire, Lucius must turn to his past to find strength and honor to restore Rome to its former glory, according to the film's official synopsis.
The cast of “Gladiator 2” also includes Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Lior Raz and Derek Jacobi. Scott is producing the film alongside Douglas Wick, Lucy Fisher, Michael Pruss and David Franzoni. Walter Parkes, Laurie MacDonald, Raymond Kirk and Aidan Elliott are executive producers.
“Gladiator 2” is scheduled to open exclusively in theaters on Nov. 22, including IMAX and large-format screenings.
