In a light fact checking published Friday, far-left Washington Post fact-checker Glenn Kessler examined Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz's claim that he carried “weapons of war … into war.”
Walz, the current governor of Minnesota, made the claim in 2018 while advocating for gun control.
“We can make sure that the weapons of war that he brought to war are the only place those weapons are,” he said at the time during what appeared to be a campaign speech.
Listen:
Here Walz rants about banning your guns and at the end of his rant claims he carried “weapons of war” “in war”. Everything I can find about him says he did not see combat service and it is reported that when war came, he avoided deployment. pic.twitter.com/79TlC7aloB

In Kessler's fact-checking, he carried a lot, a lot, a lot of water for Walz by denying that he had committed stolen property and by denying that he essentially pretended to have served in Afghanistan. Both of these Kessler conclusions are suspect and can be refuted.
But as for Walz's claim that he carried “weapons of war…into war,” Kessler had the decency to admit that was a lie, even as the fact-checker tried to sugar coat the lie .
“There is no evidence that Walz served in combat — and has not claimed to have done so,” Kessler wrote. “He received ribbons for his marksmanship and hand grenade proficiency, according to military records obtained through an open records request by MPR News.”
“Evaluation: Walz's language was sloppy and false. He carried weapons of war, but not to war”, the fact checker concluded.
In other words, Walz lied.
After the fact-check was released, Vice President Kamala Harris' presidential campaign finally came clean.
“In arguing why weapons of war should never be on our streets or in our classrooms, the governor got it wrong,” a spokesman said in a statement to NBC News.
“He handled weapons of war and strongly believes that only military personnel trained to carry these deadly weapons should have access to them, unlike Donald Trump and JD Vance, who prioritize the gun lobby over our children,” he said. add spokesperson

Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump's campaign was unimpressed with the setback.
“Why doesn't Tim Walz address his lies himself?” Trump campaign communications director Steven Cheung asked Fox News. “Why does he have to send lowly spokespeople to clean up his own mess? Walz is a liar and a con artist, and Kamala chose a running mate who shares his vile values.
All of this comes days after Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance accused Walz of “stolen value.”
Although Walz served in the Army National Guard for decades, he retired to run for Congress just before his unit was sent to Iraq in 2005 under Operation Enduring Freedom.
However, for years, Walz has described himself as “a veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom.”
In Kessler's fact-check, he excused this discrepancy by pointing out that Walz served in Italy during Operation Enduring Freedom.
However, according to the Washington Free Beacon, this is typical corporate propaganda media obfuscation.
In fact, claims to have served in Operation Enduring Freedom”historically applied to someone who served on the ground in Afghanistan during the Global War on Terrorism”, notes the Beacon.
Walz did not serve on the ground in Afghanistan. As a result, Vance has accused him of perpetrating stolen property:
You know what really annoys me about Tim Walz?
When the US Marine Corps asked me to go to Iraq to serve my country, I did.
When Tim Walz was asked by his country to go to Iraq, he left the military and allowed his unit to go without him. I think it's a shame. pic.twitter.com/Dq9xjn4R51

“I wonder Tim Walz, when were you ever at war?” Vance said at an event this week in Michigan. “What was that weapon you carried to war? What bothers me about Tim Walz is this stolen value junk. Don't pretend to be something you're not.”
“I would be ashamed if I were him and lied about my military service like he did,” he added.
