The president of the National Education Association (NEA) gave a strange speech that made some think of a parody of the TV show “The Office.” As the NEA Annual Meeting and Representative Assembly (RA) takes place in Philadelphia, NEA President Becky Pringle delivered a speech that could have been straight out of an episode of The Office.

Pringle demanded transformative social justice change in the education system in the pursuit of equity, which bordered on racial politics. “We've worked hard to rid ourselves of a tyrannical, deceitful and corrupt White House, but the reality is that the seeds that were sown during that awful season continue to germinate,” Pringle said. Corey DeAngelis, a school choice advocate, called her speech “off the wall,” stating, “These power-hungry control freaks think they own your kids. They're in a cult that loves the government and hates the parents. It's time to defund the teachers' unions. Becky Pringle took out a Dwight Schrute. She's desperate to keep control over the minds of other people's children.” Pringle is leading the charge for social justice in education and claims that this is the only way forward even though it has been shown to decrease learning outcomes.
The fictional character Schrute refers to the Italian fascist dictator Benito Mussolini. Pringle's sample was thought to be disturbingly similar to Schrute's speech on the show.
