On July 26, 2024, at approximately 8:40 p.m., the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) East District answered to reports of shots fired at the intersection of East 36th St and North Wittfield Street.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers searched for possible victims and evidence of the shooting. During the investigation, shots were fired at officers by an unidentified individual, resulting in an IMPD East District officer being shot.

The officer, who has served the department for eight years, was taken to Eskenazi Hospital in stable condition. Fortunately, no civilians were injured during the incident.
Several investigative units, including the IMPD K9 Unit, the Special Weapons and Tactics Team and drone officers, were called to the scene to search the area.
The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team initiated a criminal investigation, while the Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency collected evidence.
Support services including the Police Officer Support Team, Chaplain's Office and Victim Support Unit were on site to help officers and their families deal with the aftermath .
The FBI and ATF are assisting in the ongoing investigation.
No suspects have been arrested at this time and detectives are asking for help from local residents who may have relevant information or surveillance footage.
