The fate of Manchester City hangs in the balance between 115 positions

Manchester City's fate in light of the 115 charges they face remains uncertain, with a decision by an independent commission not expected until the spring. The hearing, initially scheduled for November, has been moved to mid-September in order to speed up the process. However, the legal nature of the procedure means that the timetable can still change.

The formal hearing is expected to last around 10 weeks, during which both the Premier League and Manchester City will present extensive legal arguments. After that, the independent commission will deliberate on the evidence and charges, a process that could take several months due to the sheer volume of information.

Even once a decision has been made, it may not be the end of the matter. If Manchester City are found guilty of any or all of the charges, they are likely to appeal, further delaying possible penalties or point deductions. The hope is that the issue will be resolved within the next calendar year, but it could drag on until the end of 2025.

As well as the 115 charges, Manchester City are also involved in a separate legal dispute with the Premier League. However, this is considered a separate issue and will not affect the charges procedure.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters acknowledges the frustration and uncertainty these legal cases bring to the new season. However, he stresses the need to enforce the rules to maintain the integrity of the competition.

Manchester City, who have won two league titles since they were charged in February last year, vehemently deny all the allegations. The charges relate to rules on accurate financial reporting, submission of manager and player payment information, compliance with UEFA's financial regulations and co-operation with the Premier League's investigation.

Other clubs, including Leicester and Everton, are also facing investigations for alleged breaches of the league's profitability and sustainability rules. Despite the challenges, Masters insists the League will continue to apply these rules fairly and proportionately.
