Another music artist has been added to the list of those asking former President Donald Trump not to use their songs at his rallies.
This time, it is owned by the late singer Sinéad O'Connor who once called the former president a “biblical demon”. The Irish songwriter and activist died in 2023 at the age of 56, but her estate and record label are speaking on her behalf, demanding that Trump “stop using her music immediately.”
“Throughout her life, it is well known that Sinéad O'Connor lived by a fierce moral code defined by honesty, kindness, fairness and decency towards her fellow man,” said the statement issued on Monday by O'Connor's property and label, Chrysalis. Records.
So it was with outrage that we learned that Donald Trump has been using his iconic rendition of 'Nothing Compares 2 U' at his political rallies,” the statement continued, referring to the iconic 1990 hit by O 'Connor which was originally written by Prince and was nominated for three Grammy Awards.
Variety reported that Trump “most recently played the song” at campaign events held in Maryland and North Carolina.
“It is no exaggeration to say that Sinéad would have been disgusted, hurt and insulted to have her work misrepresented in this way by someone she herself referred to as a 'biblical demon,'” the statement continued.
“As guardians of his legacy, we demand that Donald Trump and his associates stop using his music immediately,” he concluded.
In an interview with hot press in 2020, O'Connor's disdain for Trump was evident, as he expressed, “I really believe that Donald Trump is the biblical devil.”
“Nobody should think he's doing this just so he can get elected,” he said at the time. “He's diabolical enough to believe such things. They should have dragged him out of the White House the moment he separated the first child from his parents at the Mexican border.”
O'Connor's name joins a long list of other disgruntled artists who have demanded the former president not use his music at his events, as if ordinary Americans weren't smart enough to understand that the songs did not necessarily indicate an endorsement.
In accordance with CNN:
In 2020, the Rolling Stones threatened legal action against the Trump campaign for using their music at their campaign rallies, and Tom Petty's family issued a cease and desist notice to the Trump campaign after it played “I Won't Back Down” at a rally. REM and Linkin Park also complained about Trump incorporating their songs during his 2020 campaign.
In 2016, Adele told the Republican politician that he did not have permission to use her music, while in 2018 Aerosmith's Steven Tyler ordered his lawyer to send a cease and desist letter to the Trump campaign over the use from the classic hit “Dream”. Turned on.”
Other anti-Trump artists who have spoken out include Neil Young (“Rockin' In The Free World”), Elton John (“Rocketman”) and Queen (“We Are The Champions”).
The Smiths' Johnny Marr reacted on social media to Trump playing “Please, please, please, Let Me Get What I Want.”
“Never in a million years would I have thought this could happen,” Marr wrote. “Think that shit closes right now.”
Ahh…right…ok. Never in a million years would I have thought this could happen. Consider this shit closed right now. https://t.co/M6eYROedOy

While Trump's critics celebrated O'Connor's ownership by calling him out for using his song, many X users took a different view.
It's actually the song “Princes”. Just recorded it and released it.

I remember hating fascism and the bloodshed of a senseless war. Sounds like a Trump supporter to me!

A fierce moral code defined by honesty, kindness, fairness and decency towards one's fellow man, except when it comes to President Donald Trump.

Absolutely shocking to see Sinéad O'Connor's estate attack Trump for using “Nothing Compares 2 U” during his campaign. It's clear that the spirit of his music, which resonates with honesty, kindness and justice, is something our political landscape desperately needs…
