An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) official in the Biden administration defended the agency's decision to meet with an anti-border immigration activist.

Michael Lumpkin, ICE Chief of Staff known on Tuesday with Setareh Ghandehari, director of advocacy for the Detention Watch Network who has the tag “AbolishBorders” in her bio, to discuss her organization's demands “for a world without ICE detention.” ICE Deputy Director Patrick Lechleitner defended Lumpkin's meeting with Ghandehari, saying during a news conference Thursday that “what we need to do is have these discussions with immigration advocacy groups.”

“We meet with as many parties as possible on both sides of the aisle to get everyone's input,” Lechleitner said. “We are mission-focused and mission-driven and we support our workforce as much as possible to do the mission.”

Lechleitner then said it was “absolutely not” against ICE's mission for Lumpkin to meet with someone like Ghandehari.

I WILL SEE:

“It's not outside of the normal debate with various organizations that are more aggressive on immigration, or want to be less aggressive on immigration,” Lechleitner said. “Actually, it's what we have to do. We have to make sure we understand the dialogue so we can communicate with people and explain where we're coming from.”

The Biden administration has taken several steps that limit ICE's immigration enforcement capabilities, including curbing the arrests and deportations of illegal immigrants. ICE had thousands of empty beds in detention centers from October.

Illegal immigration has he shot himself under the policies of the Biden administration. Apprehensions of migrants at the southern border topped 2 million in fiscal 2023, up from about 1.6 million in 2021, but down from 2.2 million in fiscal 2022. seconds to the Customs and Border Protection data.

ICE did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
