The “Declaration of Independence” task allows students to declare “independence” from their parents

-

One institute assigned students homework on the “Declaration of Independence” which included the option to declare their “independence” from their parents and authority.

Many Americans are intimately familiar with the “Declaration of Independence,” as written by Thomas Jefferson, as it is one of the fundamental founding documents upon which our country is based.

The history of the “Declaration of Independence” is taught in many, many high schools. However, in Gorham, Maine, a progressive public high school assignment added a twist. Students were told to write an assignment for “My Declaration of Independence,” which provided options for declaring independence from parents and other forms of authority.

Fox News Digital obtained all student assignments that were turned in by teacher Sara Hampton for the 2022-2023 school year through a public records request. She is a high school Social Sciences teacher and the work was done in one of her classes.

“The social studies course reviewed 'institutionalized racism' and provided the 'evidence' of 'systemic racism'. It also probed students about their alleged internal biases,” Fox News reported. “There were also questions that led students to confess their alleged internal 'unconscious biases'.”

“The course asked students questions like, 'Why are most Americans, even women, likely to be sexists?' and “What can you assume about your unconscious biases? What are some prejudices that you are aware that you have?'” continued the medium.

Another question was “Why do we often act defensively when confronted with our unconscious biases?”

The task continued to turn left by asking students to declare independence from the “problematic” things in their lives. One of those things was his parents.

“Now's your chance to officially declare yourself independent of something…anything!” the description of the task explained to the students. “Think of something in your life that is problematic for you. Get rid of anything that causes you stress, makes you unhappy, anything that you struggle with or find hard to deal with.”

The school does not comment on the work which speaks volumes for itself.

Conservative education activist Shawn McBreairty was the first to seize on the blatant assignment and expose it.

For context, from Charter of Rights Institute:

The Declaration contained 3 sections: a general statement of the theory of natural rights and the purpose of government; a list of grievances against the British king; and the declaration of independence from England. More than 20 years later, the Second, Third, Fourth, and Sixth Amendments to the Constitution would contain prohibitions against government to prevent the very forms of tyranny listed as grievances. Jefferson's writing was influenced by George Mason's Virginia Declaration of Rights, as well as his study of natural rights theory and the writings of John Locke, including the two treatises on government. Franklin and Adams edited Jefferson's draft, and the final document was presented to Congress about two weeks later.

On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted to declare independence from England. Congress made several changes to Jefferson's draft, including removing references that condemned slavery. On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was adopted. John Hancock, President of the Continental Congress, signed it that day. The rest of Congress signed on two months later. By putting their names to the document, the signatories boldly pledged to each other their “'lives…fortunes…and sacred honor.”

Hampton taught another class that instructed students to form their “political identity.”

“This class is designed to help students navigate America's politics by learning the means by which democratic systems take place in our country. By understanding media bias and polarization, students will be able to better understand the facts that are often hidden behind agendas. This course … will help students form their own political identity,” the course description stated.

Many parents would find this professor's twisting of the “Declaration of Independence” disgusting…if they knew.
