Climate bigotry resulted in federal felony charges after a US Constitution trick resulted in tens of thousands of dollars in damages.
For those who believe that the clock is ticking down to civilization's demise due to ecological disaster, no work of art or story has more value than its warnings of doom. However, a press release from the Department of Justice easily calculated a sum, since the cost of cleaning up the red dust scattered in the Rotunda of the National Archives had exceeded $50,000.
On Friday, after a Feb. 14 stunt, the DOJ announced that Donald Zepeda, 35, of Maryland, and Jackson Green, 27, of Utah, were charged with felony destruction of government property after they splashed a red substance on the display case of the US Constitution .
“Zepeda and Green are charged with felony destruction of government property for pouring a fine red powder over the document display case in the Archives Rotunda building. The cost of cleaning up after the stunt, which was intended to scream attention to climate change, has already surpassed $50,000,” the statement said. “Also, the event closed the Rotunda for four days.”

The DOJ further detailed that Green had been charged with another act of vandalism in November that included a charge of destruction of property at the National Gallery of Art. US District Judge Amy Berman Jackson later ordered the activist to stay out of DC and to stay away from museums and public monuments.
For violating the conditions of his release, Judge Berman Jackson ordered the suspect to be held in the D.C. Jail on February 22. Zepeda was arrested on February 28 on his way to meet with “another environmental protester,” according to the Justice Department.
Green's alleged National Gallery of Art stunt was not the only one committed there in 2023, as vandals also associated with activist group Declare Emergency had done so. smeared paint throughout the showcase of the “Little Ballerina of Fourteen Years” by the French artist Edgar Degas.
Reacting to a release of Zepeda on Thursday wearing an ankle monitor and restraints, Declare Emergency praised the fanatic, posting: “A true protector of people and the planet. Peaceful warrior. Truth teller. Broadcast.”

On the day of the incident, they had stated: “We do not want the end of civilization, but this is the path we are currently on. Declaring Emergency nonviolent civil disobedience is love in action every day, not just on Valentine's Day.”
As previously reported, U.S. Archivist Dr. Colleen Shogan issued a statement demanding the prosecution of those responsible, saying, “The Rotunda of the National Archives is the sanctuary of our nation's founding documents. They are here for all Americans see and understand the principles of our nation. We take this act of vandalism very seriously and will insist that the perpetrators be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
Others were equally offended that the security present during the incident had stopped and let it happen.
