The Biden administration could greenlight the use of Medicaid funds to house migrants in a blue state

President Joe Biden's administration could soon approve a request from Massachusetts to use Medicaid funds to house migrants, Axios reported Thursday.

The state of Massachusetts plans to offer up to six months of housing and other assistance for immigrant families and expectant mothers through Medicaid, seconds in Axios. The housing plan and other changes the state is seeking to its Medicaid program are expected to result in $2 billion in federal reimbursements, a Massachusetts Health Services spokesman told the network.

Democratic Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey met with officials at the White House last week to discuss the waiver request, a Healey spokesman told Axios.

Healey seeks to take pressure off the state's emergency assistance shelters that are full to capacity due to the influx of migrants, seconds in the Boston Herald. Some immigrant families who can't get asylum have been sleeping at Boston's Logan Airport.

“The Commonwealth, like other states, has faced a recent influx of immigrants, including recent arrivals with immigration status that entitles them to full Medicaid benefits,” Massachusetts wrote in a request to the Biden Administrator's Health and Human Services (HHS) in October 2023.

Illegal immigration has soared under the Biden administration, with millions of migrants entering the southern border since 2021.

The Border Patrol encountered approximately 1.6 million migrants at the southern border in fiscal year 2021, seconds to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data. There were more than 2 million migrant encounters in fiscal year 2023.

CBP has encountered more than 750,000 illegal immigrants at the southern border since the start of fiscal year 2024, according to federal data.

Former President Donald Trump and Biden are heading on the southern border on Thursday to address the ongoing migration crisis. Biden is headed to Brownsville, Texas, and Trump will visit Eagle Pass, Texas.

Healey and HHS did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.
