More than 120,000 gun safes from four different companies, all made in China, have been recalled due to safety issues with the locks.
Defective biometric locks are to blame for the recall affecting safes made by Bulldog Cases, Machir, MouTec and Awesafe, according to an announcement from the Consumer Product Safety Commission on Thursday.
The recall targeted models with locking issues that would allow unauthorized users access to safes and their contents and could pose a “risk of serious injury and risk of death” if firearms are stored in the interior, according to the CPSC.
Bulldog received “four reports of the safe being opened by an unauthorized user. There were no injuries,” according to the recall. This has been reported to affect the Magnum Biometric Pistol Vault (BD4030B), Magnum Biometric Pistol Vault with Shelf (BD4040B), and Magnum Biometric Top Load Pistol Vault (BD4055B) models.
Targeted holsters sold for $194-$216 at Bass Pro Shops, Walmart, gun stores nationwide, as well as Amazon from July 2016 through January 2024.
“Consumers should immediately stop using the biometric feature on the removed safe, remove the batteries from the safe, and use only the key when storing firearms. Contact Bulldog for a repair kit or a free replacement safe for consumers with Magnum biometric pistol holsters, or a free replacement safe for consumers with Magnum biometric top-loading pistol holsters,” the report notes.
Nearly 25,000 personal safes made by Machir, in a dozen different serial number ranges, have been recalled after 15 reports of the safes “being opened by unauthorized users when the biometric lock failed secured the safe.”
Specific models were sold for about $98 at Walmart stores, as well as online at Walmart and Machir.com from July 2019 through September 2021.
“Contact Machir for instructions on how to disable the biometric lock feature and how to receive a free replacement safe. Consumers will be asked to disable the biometric reader and email a photo of the disabled biometric reader” to company for a free replacement, the reminder notes.
About 2,200 Biometric Gun Security Model Number BBRKIN QCJJ01 with specific serial numbers ranging from SQC202121000 to SQC202247603 were recovered.
“The company received a report of the safe being opened by an unauthorized user, a 6-year-old boy. There were no injuries,” according to the recollection.
The affected safes were sold from September 2021 to February 2023 and only on Amazon, for about $170 to $400.
The company Awesafe recalled 60,000 affected safes described as having a black exterior and holding two guns. The “Awesafe” brand is on the front of the products.
“Consumers should immediately stop using the biometric feature, remove the batteries and use only the key in the recalled safes to store firearms until they receive the free replacement safe. Contact Awesafe to receive instructions on how to disable the biometric feature and receive a free replacement safe,” the recall notes.
The company reported “71 incidents of removed gun safes opened by unauthorized users when the biometric lock failed to secure the safe. There were no injuries.”
Specific models were sold from August 2019 through December 7, 2022 for about $130 in Walmart stores, as well as online at Amazon.com and Walmart.com.
In particular, each of the companies indicated that the products were manufactured in China.
The latest recall of safes due to faulty locks comes months after Fortress Safe issued a recall of more than 60,000 safes over the fingerprint access technology being breached. The October action followed the death of a 12-year-old boy.
