Texas superintendent responds to backlash for suspending black student over dress code with defiant full-page ad

-

The superintendent of a Texas school district isn't budging or apologizing after suspending a black student a second time for violating the district's dress code with dreadlocks.

Greg Poole took out a full-page ad in the Houston Chronicle defending his position after Darryl George and his family filed a lawsuit against Gov. Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton for failing to enforce the CROWN Act in Texas. The acronym stands for “Create a respectful and open world for natural hair.” Superintendent faces possible dismissal due to student sanction.

“Barbers Hill Independent School District Superintendent Greg Poole ran a full-page ad on Jan. 14 in the Houston Chronicle to defend the suspension of a student for excessively long hair. He said districts with a code of traditional dress are more confident and achieve higher academic performance.” Fox News reported

“We will not lose sight of the primary goal, high standards for our students, by bowing to political pressure or responding to misinformed media reports. These entities have 'lesser' goals that ultimately harm children,” Poole wrote in the ad.

“George remains on suspension from school, according to family spokeswoman Candice Matthews. He has faced months of disciplinary action because Barbers Hill Independent School District officials say his hairstyle violates the school's dress code. male students.” CBS58 reported

Leftists pounced on a section of the ad where Poole claimed that “being American requires conformity.”

“Our military academies … maintain a rigorous expectation of dress. They realize that being an American requires conforming to the positive benefit of the unit and being a part of something bigger than yourself,” Poole said in the 'announcement

It didn't take long for former Obama Education Department Secretary Arne Duncan to voice his outrage and demand that Poole be fired for suspending the student. twice about her hairstyle.

“Dear School Board: Please do your job and fire this superintendent,” he wrote to X.

“District claims 18-year-old middle school student Darryl George's twisted dreadlocks violate policy limiting hair length for male students. District said other students with locs comply with length policy” , Fox News wrote.

“We have African-American students with longer hair than our dress code allows. They applied for, qualified for, and received religious exemptions. . . . Criticism in the . . . media is based on assumptions that the school district clings to outdated social values or norms, but academic excellence never goes out of style,” Poole stated in his ad.

George and his mother claim that his grades have suffered from the issue. He feels he was singled out and treated unfairly, especially because his hair was twisted and tied on top of his head, not hanging down. The student states that it should not be considered a dress code violation.

George claimed he was being subjected to “cruel treatment” in an affidavit.

“I love my hair, it's sacred and it's my strength,” George said. “All I want to do is go to school and be a model student. I'm being bullied by school officials and treated like a dog.”

The family is moving forward with its lawsuit that charges Poole violated state law by punishing the student.

“A trial is scheduled for Feb. 22 to determine whether the district's dress code restrictions violate the CROWN Act. The new Texas law, which took effect in September, prohibits hair discrimination based on race and prohibits employers and schools penalize people because of hair texture or protective hairstyles, such as afros, braids, dreadlocks, twists or Bantu knots,” Fox News noted.

“I'm glad they're listening to us too. I'm glad things are moving and we're getting through it,” the student said of the trial.

“I have an 18-year-old son who wants to go to school, who wants to get an education, and you do it for you. Why?” the student's mother, Darresha George, demanded angrily.

The mother is obviously out for blood on the matter.

“Poole alleged that the family's attorney said he wanted to bankrupt the school district and its leaders during court proceedings.” the messenger reported
