Texas lawmakers call for resignation of Democratic representative who tried to strip Trump of Secret Service protection

In the wake of the historic botched assassination of President Donald Trump, Texas state lawmakers are calling for the resignation of Rep. Jasmine Crocket (D-TX) after the Democratic congresswoman lobbied for the 45th POTUS to remove her Secret Service protection .

Crockett was one of eight Democrats to sponsor HR 8081.

The bill, also known as the Denial of Endless Security and Government Resources Allocated to the Extremely Dishonorable Former Protégés Act, took aim at Trump after his conviction in a New York court in April .

It sought to end the presidential protective detail for anyone convicted of a federal or state crime punishable by at least one year in prison.

While it didn't mention Trump by name, the bill was specifically tailored to his unique case.

The Democrats behind the push were widely criticized for brazenly trying to put Trump in harm's way by removing his security protection.

In a letter sent to Crockett on Monday, 27 Texas lawmakers and candidates for office called for the congresswoman's resignation.

The letter quoted Crocket's co-sponsorship of the bill this would have eliminated Trump's Secret Service protective detail if it had happened.

In their letter to Crocket, state lawmakers wrote:

“Texans believe that regardless of party, the presidents of the United States of America, both current and former, must be protected.

“Considering Saturday's assassination attempt on President Trump, which resulted in him being literally shot in the ear and other innocent Americans being killed or injured, and, as you, just three months ago , you sponsored legislation (HR 8081) to eliminate his Secret Service Protective Detail, we, the undersigned current and future members of the Texas Legislature, are calling on you to immediately resign from your position in Congress.

“You have lost any moral authority to represent the state of Texas.”

State Rep. Brian Harrison led the call for Crockett's resignation.

Harrison, the chief of staff at Trump's Department of Health and Human Services, said Crockett's actions do not represent the Texans they serve.

“Democratic extremists like Jasmine Crockett who are working to make it easier to hurt former presidents should not be representing Texas in Congress,” Harrison said.

“I shudder to think what would have happened if three months ago they had succeeded in taking out President Trump's security detail.

“My colleagues and I will not tolerate this and demand his resignation.

“The Texans we serve believe that the security of America's presidents is non-negotiable.”

The 27 Texas lawmakers and candidates who signed the letter include:

  • Brian Harrison, Texas State Representative
  • Briscoe Cain, Texas State Representative

It comes after a shooter tried to assassinate Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

Trump was shot in the ear and only narrowly avoided death.

Questions are now growing after the Secret Service and local police failed to identify and neutralize the shooter before he could shoot the 45th president.

The suspect has been identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old man from Pennsylvania.

His motives are unknown at this time, as little information has emerged about Crooks.

Crooks' home was raided on Saturday and authorities found explosives in his car.

Records also indicate that Crooks was a Democratic donor.
