A contractor tasked by New York City Mayor Eric Adams' administration with managing immigration services is throwing away tens of thousands of uneaten meals, the company reports.
In one day, while many New Yorkers go hungry, DocGo threw 5,000 uneaten meals into the trash, the New York Post reports
DocGo “was awarded a major no-bid $432 million contract by Mayor Adams' administration to help relocate some migrants in the state,” according to The Post, and receives “up to $33 a day to provide three meals for each of the country's 4,000 asylum seekers.” his care,” according to a New York Times report.
“A significant number of these meals, however, are being left in the bin, with more than 70,000 'wasted' between October 22 and November 22, according to internal records obtained by the outlet,” it continues The Post. “More than 5,000 meals for asylum seekers were thrown away on November 6 alone, records show.”
Once a COVID-testing company, the controversial contractor charges the Big Apple $11 per meal, the most it can charge under its contract.
“Based on that figure, the cost of food thrown away during that 20-day stretch would have set taxpayers back roughly $776,000, or $39,000 a day,” The Post reports.
Trash meals included 24 chicken Alfredos and 24 chicken spaghetti dinners in one night; at least 110 dinners at Albany's Holiday Inn on Nov. 12; and 184 Halloween lunches at the Brooklyn Vybe Hotel.

A DocGo spokesman said The Times' data was “not accurate,” but did not elaborate. Food consumption for migrants, the spokesman said, is currently 93%.
This, notes The Post, “despite internal records.”
“DocGo has continued to fulfill its contractual obligations and has not ordered more than 3 meals per day for each asylum seeker,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
“DocGo continuously monitors food consumption and works to proactively identify savings opportunities on behalf of New York. Meal consumption currently stands at 93%,” the statement continued. “The cost of all meals is passed directly to the City with no margin, and most meals are purchased through nonprofits, minority- and women-owned caterers, and other small businesses.”
DocGo contracts with the New York Department of Housing Preservation and Development and stated that the average price for a meal had recently dropped to $7.82.
Gale Brewer is the chair of the Council's research committee. He has repeatedly called on the Adams administration to cancel or reduce DocGo's contract.
“They're the most expensive meals and if you're offering expensive meals, charging for them, you're either not offering the meals they want to eat or you're overbuying,” Brewer told The Post. “Something is happening and the waste is outrageous.”
As a result of the billion-dollar immigration crisis, Adams is making across-the-board budget cuts to all city agencies.
“I have all these nonprofits that do human services that are cut into the budget,” Brewer said. “I don't understand how we have a book like this.”
Councilwoman Julie Won, chairwoman of the contracts committee, criticized the waste.
“They're spending $463 million on food during a fiscal crisis and they can't account for how much of that is actually consumed or how much of that food is rotten,” he said. “DocGo's food waste is symptomatic of a larger systemic failure on the part of the Mayor's Administration. The complete absence of oversight, accountability, quality assurance and transparency in the administration of these food contracts is shocking and must be addressed immediately.”
