A teenager who fathered a child with a teacher now serving a prison sentence has spoken about his experience, expressing his initial love for the woman but now acknowledging the extent of the abuse she suffered. The boy, named Boy B, was manipulated and controlled by Rebecca Joynes, a former teacher at his school, who was sentenced to six and a half years in prison for having sexual activity with a boy.
Boy B, along with another student known as Boy A, were looked after by Joynes from the age of 15. The 30-year-old teacher was found guilty of six counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child, including two while being a person in a position of trust. Joynes became pregnant with Child B's child while on bail for her involvement with Child A.
In a victim impact statement, Boy B revealed his struggle to come to terms with the abuse he suffered, initially defending Joynes and feeling guilty for trying against her. She also expressed her belief that a female victim of a teacher would have received more support, highlighting the gender inequality in how these cases are perceived and handled.
Boy B also spoke about the aftermath of the abuse, describing it as a dark time when he felt trapped and alone. Despite the trauma, she managed to get out of school with straight As. However, she now struggles with the idea of ​​entering into a relationship due to her negative experience with Joynes.
The teenager also expressed his frustration at the lack of support services for male victims of sexual abuse. She hopes for an increase in these services in the future, as she believes many such crimes go unnoticed because men botch things up.
Boy B also pointed out Joynes' lack of remorse and his family's refusal to acknowledge his wrongdoing. He concluded by stating that he will always be linked to Joynes through his son, a reality he did not imagine for his future. Joynes gave birth to her son in early 2024, but the boy was taken from her within 24 hours.
