Suspected Oceanside home invader stopped dead by gun-owning resident in California [VIDEO]

A man suspected of trying to invade a home was shot and dead by an Oceanside resident on Monday, police said.

According to the Oceanside Police Department, the incident occurred around 7:22 p.m. in the 4100 block of Diamond Circle.

Officers responded to a report of an assault and shots fired.

Two residents were inside the home during the attempted break-in when an unknown man armed with a rock and a stick entered the backyard and then entered through a sliding bedroom door.

The suspect threw the rock at one of the residents and hit him in the face.

The injured neighbor then grabbed a gun and fired at least three shots at the suspect, hitting him once in the chest.

Despite the life-saving efforts of paramedics, the suspect, a 22-year-old man, died at the scene.

Police said the neighbor who fired the shots was not arrested.

They are investigating the incident as a possible act of self-defense.
