Suspect pulls ghost gun on Eureka police and gets swiss cheese [VIDEO]

Eureka, CA – The Eureka Police Department (EPD) recently released body camera footage and radio transmissions related to an officer-involved shooting that occurred in late November. The incident happened near the Humboldt County Library on Sunday morning, November 26, 2023, after a 31-year-old suspect ran from officers during a traffic stop.

According to EPD, Officer Ryan Swanson initiated the traffic stop on M Street, north of 2nd Street, when he noticed the expired tags on the vehicle. When the vehicle stopped, the right front passenger, later identified as Matthew Robert Williams, 31, of Cutten, California, immediately got out and began running on foot. Williams fled east on a walkway north of the Ingomar Club to the north side of the Humboldt County Library.

While Officer Swanson stayed with the vehicle and its occupants, additional officers responded to the scene to search for Williams. An officer saw him trying to scale a closed fence on the north side of Clara May Berry Park. Verbal commands were given for Williams to surrender, but he refused, leading to a physical altercation. Another officer arrived to render assistance.

During the altercation, Williams pulled a handgun from his right hand and chambered a live round down the slide, according to EPD. K9 Officers Jeremy Sollum and Nick Jones, responding to the imminent threat, fired several rounds at Williams, fatally wounding him.
