Approximately 60% of the migrants encountered at the U.S. northern border are Indian nationals. This is a substantial proportion, indicating a focused trend among migrants from India. Many Indian migrants opt for entering the U.S. via Canada, largely due to Canada’s more favorable immigration policies. Programs like the express entry system for skilled migrants offer a streamlined pathway, making Canada an appealing starting point before crossing into the U.S. However, this route presents significant challenges, including navigating through dense forests and contending with severe weather, especially in winter.

Challenges and Risks

Despite the perceived safety of this route compared to Central America or Mexico, migrants face considerable risks. A critical challenge is the bilateral agreement between the U.S. and Canada, which can lead to expedited denial of asylum applications, complicating the legal process for the migrants. Additionally, the harsh environmental conditions on the northern border can pose serious threats to their safety.

Drivers and taxis play a crucial role in moving migrants from the border to urban centers like New York City, where they seek employment.
