Stefanik files complaint against Trump-implicated judge for “grossly inappropriate” behavior and public supporter

-

U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik, RN.Y., is seeking an ethics investigation of a judge who allegedly engaged in “grossly inappropriate political speech.”

The GOP leader who has been a supporter of former President Donald Trump filed a complaint Friday seeking an investigation by U.S. District Court Judge Beryl Howell, who is currently overseeing Rudy Giuliani's libel trial.

Howell has spoken out on several cases related to Trump and the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. But Stefanik's presentation specifically draws attention to remarks made by Howell in a speech last month at a Women's White Collar Defense Association gala where she was presented with an award.

“I filed a judicial misconduct complaint against Judge Beryl Howell, because judicial election interference destroys public confidence in the federal judiciary, tears at the fabric of our Republic, and is illegal. It must stop now.” , Stefanik said in a statement.

The judge “made a very inappropriate speech in which she implied that the election of President Trump will lead to fascism in America,” Stefanik continued. “She also inappropriately allowed a public display of her cozy personal relationships with her partisan friends who appear before her, including Biden's deputy attorney general overseeing the January 6 criminal proceedings.”

Stefanik claims the “partisan” speech was “obviously very inappropriate election interference” in the filing sent to DC Appellate Court Chief Justice Sri Srinivasan.

In his acceptance speech, Howell said, “We are living in a very surprising and frankly troubling time in this country when the importance of facts is dismissed or ignored.”

“My judicial colleagues in DC and I regularly see the impact of big lies in the sentencing of hundreds, hundreds of individuals who have been convicted of criminal conduct on January 6, 2021, when they discontinued the certification of the 2020 US presidential election. Capitol,” he said, according to NBC News.

“As district court judges, we are all concerned with the facts,” he added.

Although the judge, who was appointed by President Barack Obama, did not mention Trump by name in her speech, she did quote historian Heather Cox Richardson's book “Democratic Awakening” that “the big lies they are springboards for authoritarians.”

In his complaint, Stefanik said Howell's words were “hardly apolitical” and were “clearly inappropriate, consisting of partisan statements, election interference and inappropriate out-of-court statements while criminal cases are pending.”

The New York lawmaker claimed that Howell “promoted the Democratic political campaign theme that the re-election of Donald Trump amounts to America choosing authoritarianism.”

Last month, Stefanik filed a lawsuit against Judge Arthur Engoron, the judge overseeing Trump's civil fraud trial in New York. The chairman of the House GOP Conference accused Engoron of showing “inappropriate bias and judicial intemperance” toward Trump.

According to NBC News, Howell declined the channel's request for comment, “and a spokesman for the United States District Court for the District of Columbia did not immediately return a request for comment.”
