Spielberg announces new project focused on documenting the “unspeakable barbarism” of October 7

In his first public comments on the October 7 terror attack in Israel, legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg expressed his shock at the “unspeakable barbarity” that occurred.

“I never imagined that I would see such unspeakable barbarity against the Jews in my lifetime,” he said in an interview with the USC Shoah Foundationan organization he founded in 1994.

In accordance with The Jerusalem Postthe foundation “has begun collecting testimonies and accounts from survivors of the October 7 attacks as part of its Counter Anti-Semitism Through Testimony Initiative, a project documenting post-Holocaust anti-Semitism “.

“Rob Williams and the team at the USC Shoah Foundation are leading an effort that will ensure that the voices of survivors act as a powerful tool to counter the dangerous rise of anti-Semitism and hatred,” Spielberg said in his interview .

“Both initiatives – recording interviews with survivors of the 7 October attacks and the ongoing collection of Holocaust testimonies – seek to fulfill our promise to survivors: that their stories will be recorded and shared in the effort to preserve history and work for a world without anti-Semitism or hatred of any kind. We must remain united and steadfast in these efforts,” he added.

Spielberg's comments come three weeks after the US Holocaust Survivors Foundation released a letter from its founder, David Schaecter, asking him to say something:

“I have admired your career and especially your work in telling the world the horrors of the Holocaust, in film and in helping to document the experiences of tens of thousands of survivors,” the letter reads.

“That is why I, along with countless other survivors, am so heartbroken that since October 7, 2023, you have not and have not spoken out publicly against terrorism, against Hamas and the millions celebrating the spill of Jewish blood, and they want more. Why with all my heart, I encourage you to speak up for the children, women and men abducted and held hostage, and in support of Israel and Israel's right to defend itself,” he continues.

Schaecter questions the legitimacy of the USC Shoah Foundation's mission statement.

“It was not the whole purpose of recording fifty thousand testimonies of our fellow survivors to ensure that the world could never deny, and must never forget, the systematic murder of six million Jews by the Nazis, including a one and a half million children? ?On October 7, Hamas committed the worst atrocities against the Jewish people since the Holocaust,” he writes.

Finally, the letter concludes with a timely conference.

“Mr. Spielberg, Schindler's List was about a man who had the moral courage to risk his life to save others. We are not asking you to risk your life. We ask that you use your voice. Take it from those of us who were subjected to the most brutal and deadly anti-Semitism of all time: It will never go away, and Jews will never be safe until Israel is safe and secure,” he writes.

“As the world's first Jewish filmmaker, your silence is now a comfort to our enemies. Your full support of Israel and the Jewish people at this time would make a real difference, not only to our people, but to the world . We don't need another movie in 3 years about the horrors of October 7th. Instead, we need you and others to speak up NOW, when it really matters,” he adds.

In response to Spielberg's later-than-ever statement, critics were pretty harsh on him for waiting so long to finally open his mouth:

He certainly took his time to speak out against October 7. I hate to think he's planning to make a movie exploiting this, but since he's a dyed-in-the-wool lefty, nothing would surprise me, mea culpa.

Criticism was also harsh on him for being left-wing given that the vast majority of anti-Semitism today comes from the left, not the right.
