A standoff at a Mississippi Walmart has left one woman in trouble with the police and another out of a job after bystanders came forward to help a shaking child.
“When you see a child being abandoned … why wouldn't we call the police?”
On Wednesday in Byram, Miss., a woman named Felicia took it upon herself to record and later post a video of a shopper with a toddler wearing nothing but a diaper and a trash bag. According to The Weather Channel, the high temperature in the Walmart Supercenter area was 41 degrees with a recorded low of 25.
“Keep your voice down,” the alleged mother could be heard telling a customer trying to intervene on the child's behalf.
Moments earlier, as she faced off, the woman could be seen dropping a bag from the frozen food aisle directly onto the boy's bare legs.
Sharing the video, which has received more than 8.5 million views on its own, Collin Rugg detailed: “The police were called after a small child is seen in only a diaper and shaking uncontrollably while his mother refuses to give him warm clothes.”
NEW: Police called after a toddler is seen in just a nappy and shaking uncontrollably as his mother refuses to give him warm clothes.
Fortunately, an apparent buyer felt so bad that he grabbed a pair of clothes to wear.

Around the corner, twerking at those acting on the boy's behalf, the woman was unfazed by threats of police involvement, saying child protective services had already been called twice before while it mentioned something about a fire extinguisher and hot water.
Later in the recording, an elderly woman of no known relation could be seen dressing the child in clothes taken from a store rack while the mother sat idly on her phone.
On her TikTok account, Felicia shared another video where she said she understood the boy was in his grandmother's custody now after the police got involved. “Yeah, we called the police. I mean, why wouldn't we? Why wouldn't we? That's a crazy question to ask.”
“When you see a child being abandoned, don't wear any clothes, just a diaper, no shoes, no socks, no shirt, nothing. So why wouldn't we call the police?” she said.

However, the result was not very positive for Felicia herself, as she detailed in a crowdfunding effort to obtain interim financial support that her attempt to do the right thing had cost her her job.
“No, I wasn't thinking about the consequences at the time, at that time my main focus was on that poor innocent [child, and] to get him some help. Yes, I have uploaded the video on my facebook page [because] I wanted to get in touch with some of their relatives and social workers,” he explained.
After more than 3,000 views in an hour, Felicia said her manager contacted her to take it down and she complied. When she returned to work on Saturday, she said she was fired two hours before her shift ended.
“I was just trying to help and save it [baby’s] life.”

Reactions on social media were overwhelmingly supportive and appreciative of those who intervened on the child's behalf.
See something, say something.
People simply cannot turn a blind eye to the abuse or neglect of the most vulnerable: pets, children, the elderly.

What a terrible mother. Throws frozen food at his frozen body. Didn't the boy move? He has been severely abused for being too afraid to have basic normal reactions.
This is disgusting!

Another heartbreaking example of parental neglect caught on camera. How did we get to a point where the average citizen has to step in for the basic welfare of a child? It is a clear reminder of the breakdown of responsibility in our society.

It would be impossible for me not to pick up that baby and hold it close to my body until it warmed up and stopped shaking. If this woman treats him like this in public, just imagine what happens to him in private. I hope their children are removed and placed in a safe and loving place….

It's nice to see the audience on their feet and doing something with this kid. Many would have “mind their own business”. These citizens are heroes.
