Shermichael Singleton reveals which running mate choice could hurt Harris' campaign

CNN political commentator Shermichael Singleton revealed Sunday why he thinks Democratic Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro could hurt Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign if she picks him as her running mate.

Singleton appeared on “State of the Union” to discuss Harris' list of classmates, as is the vice president as reportedarrange final meetings with candidates. The CNN commentator said Shapiro was potentially “the worst” choice Harris could make because of the effect it could have on his chances of winning Michigan.

“I want to touch on the Shapiro thing. I think out of all the possibilities, it would potentially be the worst if I'm looking at Michigan. You're seeing a resurgent past…” Singleton began.

“Worse for Democrats or Republicans?” CNN anchor Dana Bash entered.

Singleton went on to state how Harris' campaign could be affected by Michigan because of the “large percentage” of Muslim voters who could abstain from voting in same way they did it in February during the primary for President Joe Biden.

“For the Democrats and for Vice President Harris to win the state of Michigan. Past statements are coming out about things he's made in the past about the Palestinian people. Some of his decisions as governor regarding workers in the 'state and their possible advocacy, which could lead to them being fired, has drawn criticism and puzzlement from younger progressives,' Singleton said.

I WILL SEE:

“I think there's a large percentage of Muslims in the state of Michigan who would absolutely stay home. I went to see some of those numbers in 2020 compared to now, the vice president can't afford to lose- ne a substantial number,” Singleton continued. “So I would look at somebody else if I were a Democrat, I don't think that would be the best option strategically.”

Bash noted, however, that Shapiro's position on the protests, the Middle East, Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are “almost identical” to other running mate choices, with the “only difference” being that the democrat governor is jewish. The CNN host asked Singleton if Harris should “give in to this,” to which the political commentator noted the “emergence” of “anti-Zionism” within parts of the party.

“Well, you know where I stand on this issue. I'm as pro-Israel as they come, you and I have had many conversations about this. But I think it speaks a little bit to the issue of younger progressive Democrats and the ceasefire . I think we're likely to see protests on college campuses again. You and I have had those conversations,” Singleton said. “I certainly don't think it's a good thing, but it shows within the Democratic Party, at least there is, and I wouldn't say broadly, but there is the emergence of a certain level of anti-Zionism. I'll put it this way, at best, and that's a problem.”

Harris He reportedly held meetings with half a dozen options over the weekend as he is expected to make a formal announcement of his choice in the coming days, seconds in the Associated Press. In addition to Shapiro, some of Harris' choices also include Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona and Transportation Secretary of the United States, Pete Buttigieg, the medium reported.
