Senator Lee asks the second knight to condemn the Christian “mockery” during the Olympic ceremony

-

In the wake of the provocative opening ceremony during the Paris Olympics, Republican Sen. Mike Lee of Utah urged Second Knight Doug Emhoff in a letter Thursday to stand up for Christians as he heads the U.S. delegation to the closing ceremony of August 11.

Inauguration of the Olympic Games in Paris ceremony on July 26 invoked outrage among many viewers for its Christian “mockery”, notably the re-enactment of the Last Supper and the use of drag queens to stand in for Christ and his disciples. In response to the outrageous display, Lee called Emhoff to convey the country's “disappointment and opposition” to the opening ceremony, which he considered an “insult to the 210 million practicing Christians in the United States.”

“The opening ceremonies in Paris were a lazy slap in the face to Christians around the world by people so lacking in talent and inspiration that they mock sacred art to feel special,” Lee told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “I hope that Mr. Emhoff, as part of the presidential delegation to the Olympics, will speak up for people of faith in the United States and around the world; it's the least he could do.”

“As the United States' representative at these ceremonies, you have a unique opportunity and responsibility to convey the sentiments of the American people in response to this bastardization of Olympic tradition.” Lee said in the letter

In response to the reaction of the opening ceremony, Olympic artistic director Thomas Jolly claimed during a press conference on July 27 that the Last Supper was not his inspiration but that he wanted to be diverse and inclusive.

“Our theme was not to be subversive,” Jolly said during the conference. “We never wanted to be subversive. We wanted to talk about diversity. Diversity means being together”, he continued. “We wanted to include everyone, as simple as that. In France we have freedom of creation, artistic freedom. We are lucky in France to live in a free country. I didn't have a specific message I wanted to deliver.”

“In France, we are a republic, we have the right to love who we want, we have the right not to be worshippers,” Jolly said. “We have a lot of rights in France, and that's what I wanted to convey.”

The IOC said in a statement that the organizers of the opening ceremony had no intention of disrespecting any religious group or belief, adding that “if anyone was offended by certain scenes, that was completely unintentional and they were sorry.”

Lee dismissed Jolly's remarks, reiterating that the performance showed “disdain for Christians and their holy images,” and left many American Christians “hurt” and “disheartened.”

“Millions of Americans watched the opening ceremony from home, eager to support Team USA's athletes in their quest for gold, only to be hurt, angry and disheartened by the disdain for a pivotal moment in the history of Christianity,” Lee said. a la carte “The opening ceremonies should have been a moment of national pride and mutual support for our competitors in awe of a global tradition that has brought nations together for centuries.”

Emhoff's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.
