It's always fun to watch the left eat its own, but as progressive Democratic senators go after Chuck Schumer (DNY) for tighter border policy provisions in the national supplemental package, conservatives find themselves in the uncomfortable position of having to root for the smug Senate Majority Leader.
“On Friday, White House officials, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, I-Ariz., Sen. James Lankford, R-Oklahoma, and aides de Schumer. and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., met on Capitol Hill for the second time this week to continue negotiations.” Fox News Digital reports “But the discussions aren't sitting well with several Democratic senators, who worry their party is making too many concessions to Republican demands for policy change.”
Senator Bob Menendez (DN.J.) — who, how BizPac Review has reported, faces federal bribery charges – shattered Schumer Thursday at X.
“Yes [Schumer] thinks he can send us home for the weekend, quietly give in to Republicans' anti-immigrant demands while no one's watching, and then ambush Democrats and expect us to vote yes with a smile, is TERRIBLELY wrong,” he said. “[Schumer] and Democrats considering these proposals need to understand that these Trump policies will do nothing to address our challenges at the border and will only exacerbate the problem.”
“Immigration advocates should speak up, hell is NOT the message,” he stated.
In accordance with axes“Any Senate compromise faces an uncertain future in the House, where Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has made clear the GOP wants substantial changes to asylum, removal and detention procedures. There are also entrenched opposition within the House GOP to additional funding for Ukraine, regardless of whether it is paired with favorable border policies.”
“Until we start seeing the language, it's hard to say,” Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) told the network. “What we hear is very worrying.”
“I'm very concerned – and upset – about the lack of outreach,” said Sen. Ben Ray Luján (DN.M), a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. “It seems like it's being shared from afar, rather than talking about specific details or a specific policy move.”
Back at X, former House member and failed Texas gubernatorial candidate Beto O'Rourke warned Democrats that the deal is “bad.”
“If Democrats embrace these failed Trump immigration policies, they will reap: Increased crossing attempts; More migrant deaths; Depressed enthusiasm among progressive voters; [and] Blame the chaos this is sure to produce,” he said he wrote Friday.
“This is a bad deal,” he said. “Senate and WH MPs should reject it.”
“I'm very concerned about the details,” said Sen. Cory Booker (DN.J.). the hill. “I don't have details on where the negotiations are, but obviously I have concerns.”
Booker also noted that “we don't know who's going to be president” after the 2024 election, making it impossible to know who will enforce new asylum and border security laws when 2025 begins.
According to The Hill, “Schumer told his colleagues Thursday that he plans to schedule a vote on an emergency foreign aid package that would include border security reforms next week.”
“He said White House and Senate negotiators will work through the weekend to reach a framework agreement,” the outlet added.
Republicans are calling for asylum processing reforms, including immediate screenings, increased detention beds and strengthened border patrol, Lankford, a top GOP negotiator, told Fox News Digital this week.
“The administration was reportedly open to a national expansion of expedited removal, which allows newly admitted migrants to be quickly removed if they do not meet the initial standard for asylum,” the outlet reports. “Speedy expulsions are currently only used close to the border.”
“I'm always concerned when there are serious conversations with the lack of details being shared,” Sen. Luján said, according to The Hill. “What's happening now is a lot like that.”
