Microsoft’s AI-powered Bing Chat recently fell prey to a sophisticated malware advertising campaign, with malicious ads infiltrating conversations and directing users to fake download sites known to distribute malware.
Bleeping Computer reports that Microsoft’s Bing Chat emerged as the software giant’s answer to Google’s dominance of the search industry. Powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4 engine, a newer version of the technology that powers ChatGPT, Bing Chat aimed to revolutionize online searches by providing users with an interactive chat-based experience, making searches more intuitive and easier to use.
However, the integration of ads into Bing Chat conversations since March has opened the door to a myriad of security issues, with threat actors exploiting the platform to spread malware through deceptive ads.
The malicious ads observed by security experts are sophisticated and promote fake download sites that distribute malware. These ads are particularly concerning because they exploit the inherent trust users place in AI-based chatbots.
