San Diego police shoot suspect carrying 11-month-old boy in bushes [VIDEO]

A heated confrontation occurred on the night of May 19 in the 400 block of 47th Street in San Diego when the San Diego Police Department received a 911 call from a woman who claimed her ex-boyfriend was threatening to shoot through the door of his apartment.

Alarmed by the imminent danger, the woman allowed the man in to prevent his threats from materializing, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. He then allegedly brandished a firearm at her and grabbed her 11-month-old daughter before leaving the flat.

Upon quickly responding to the scene, SDPD officers encountered the suspect leaving the premises. When he noticed the officers, he allegedly ran, evading authorities by crossing the complex, adjacent streetcar tracks and seeking shelter inside another apartment complex in the 200 block of 47th Street.

An officer identified the man as he hid in a bush while still holding the child, according to the sheriff's department. The officer ordered the suspect to come out of hiding, but he reportedly defied the order, prompting the officer to discharge his weapon.

Suffering at least one gunshot wound, the suspect, who allegedly held his son during the confrontation, was rushed to a nearby medical facility. Fortunately, the boy emerged unscathed from the ordeal and was safely reunited with his family. No additional injuries were reported during the incident.

The suspect, identified as Steffon Nutall, 29, of San Diego, has since been charged with multiple felony counts including kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, brandishing a firearm in a threatening manner and cruelty deliberately toward a child with the potential for serious physical harm or death. The suspect underwent surgery and is expected to survive his injuries.
