Samsung Electronics Opens a New Tab The latest premium smartphones, unveiled on Wednesday, will have multiple AI features, including simultaneous translation of phone calls in foreign languages, in the company's latest push to challenge Apple (AAPL .O), open a new tab.
Apple surpassed Samsung in smartphone shipments in 2023, opens a new tab, according to data provider International Data Corporation, dethroning Samsung for the first time since 2010, as demand for premium devices, a segment it dominates Apple, surpasses the growth of the market.
In response, Samsung is offering several AI features in its premium Galaxy S24 models as part of its strategy to attract buyers.
The new phones will have real-time two-way voice translation of a live phone call made in two different languages, which the company said the Galaxy S24 series is the first smartphone to offer.
Available in 13 different languages, the on-device AI feature is powered by Samsung's generative AI training.
It also offers a “circle to search” feature where circling any part of an image on the screen searches for it on Google. Other features include AI translation and changing the tone of messages in casual, formal, business or social media.
There's also AI summarization and translation of voice recordings, “generative editing” of photos that fill in nonexistent backgrounds, and a feature that turns real-time video into slow motion by filling in nonexistent frames with AI.
