Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has filed for bankruptcy following a defamation verdict in which he was ordered to pay nearly $150 million.
Giuliani, who backed former President Donald Trump's efforts to challenge the 2020 election, was Found in a default judgment in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia for defaming two Georgia election workers, Ruby Freeman and Wandera Moss, for accusing them of voter fraud while manning the polls. Thursday, Giuliani archived for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in New York.
“The filing should not come as a surprise to anyone,” Giuliani adviser Ted Goodman said in a statement reported by The Hill. “No person could have reasonably believed that Mayor Rudy Giuliani could pay such a large punitive amount. Chapter 11 will provide Mayor Giuliani the opportunity and time to file an appeal, while providing transparency to his finances under the supervision of the bankruptcy court, to ensure that all creditors are treated equally and fairly throughout the process.
In addition to the civil sentence, Giuliani is currently under accusation with Trump in Fulton County Superior Court in Georgia for alleged criminal racketeering with Trump as part of a conspiracy to overturn the state's 2020 election results. Giuliani has pleaded not guilty to those charges, but as it is said to have been fighting pay your legal fees in the case.
Giuliani began his public career as a lawyer in the Reagan administration, during which he served as an associate attorney general and as the US attorney for the Southern District of New York. During this time, he prosecuted notable mob figures such as Anthony “Fat Tony” Salerno, earning him a national reputation.
Giuliani served as mayor of New York City from 1994 to 2002 and received international fame for his leadership during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, being branded as “America's Mayor” on the cover of Time magazine.
Trump did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
