A 20-year-old Romanian tourist vacationing in Hawaii was seriously injured in a suspected shark attack Monday afternoon. The incident occurred while the man was swimming 15 to 20 feet into the sea at Anaehoomalu Bay in Waikoloa on Hawaii's Big Island. He suddenly experienced pain in his right foot and found lacerations on both the top and bottom of his foot, which were bleeding profusely.
The man was immediately taken to Queens North Hawaii Community Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Although the victim and two swimmers closest to him saw no sign of a shark in the water, medical personnel confirmed that the injuries were consistent with a shark bite.
Despite the incident, there were no immediate plans to close Anaehoomalu Bay. This incident comes just one day after a shark attack claimed the life of a respected lifeguard on the island of Oahu.
Tamayo Perry, 49, an ocean safety lifeguard for the City and County of Honolulu, was fatally bitten by a shark near Goat Island. Perry was not only a well-respected lifeguard, but also a professional surfer and actor, known for his roles in films such as “Blue Crush” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.” He also appeared in an episode of “Hawaii Five-0”.
Perry's wife, Emilia, expressed her grief and shock in an interview, saying, “I feel so upset and devastated, but I also have a strange calm in my heart knowing that he's in a better place. It was like I'd gone on the best 25-year vacation of my life with him, and now it's over.”
These incidents have once again highlighted the potential dangers of shark attacks in Hawaiian waters, reminding locals and tourists alike to remain vigilant while enjoying the ocean.
