Robbery suspect with AR-15 opens fire on deputy in Texas [VIDEOS]

Recently released dashcam footage captured the intense moment a Harris County Sheriff's Office 4th Precinct deputy found himself in a life-threatening situation while confronting a suspected robbery in the Klein area last Friday.

Deputy Constable Deteryon Fontonet was the target of gunfire during the incident, but was thankfully released from the hospital later that day. Fontonet suffered bullet fragment wounds in three different areas of his body.

In the video, Fontonet is seen giving orders to the suspect, later identified as Danthony Simms-Coleman. Despite Fontonet's clear instructions to cooperate, Simms-Coleman defied orders and instead reached for a concealed firearm inside the vehicle he was operating.

Moments later, shots rang out and video captures Simms-Coleman fleeing between residences as Fontonet returned fire.

The video, provided by the Harris County Sheriff's Office 4 KHOU 11 Newsdepicts the dramatic confrontation, freezing just before shots are fired, before resuming with Simms-Coleman evading capture near the truck and finally shooting Fontonet.

Officer Mark Herman reported that deputy officers were responding to reports of armed robbery incidents at two separate Academy stores, one in Willowbrook Mall and the other in Kuykendahl near the Grand Parkway. Witnesses told authorities that a suspect brandishing an AR-15 rifle had carried out the robberies.

Fontonet encountered Simms-Coleman, a 23-year-old suspect, leading him on a chase that ended on Slashwood Lane, located within a residential area near the intersection of Louetta and Kuykendahl. Although additional law enforcement units were on the way, Fontonet engaged Simms-Coleman on his own initially, in a valiant effort to protect the community.

In the midst of the confrontation, Simms-Coleman opened fire on Fontonet, prompting the deputy to seek safety while under attack.

Herman highlighted Fontonet's fortune in suffering only superficial wounds from bullet fragments, narrowly avoiding a more direct assault.

When security arrived on the scene, Simms-Coleman chose to discard his weapon and surrender after darting between houses. Herman revealed that the suspect had personal ties to the neighborhood, explaining his presence in the area.

Court records show Simms-Coleman faces charges of aggravated assault on a public servant following the dangerous incident.
