On Wednesday morning, three Ogle County deputies were injured in a shooting in the small town of Dixon, Illinois. The incident unfolded in the gated community of Lost Nation, located about 90 miles west of Chicago. Deputies were responding to a welfare call when a suspect opened fire on them. Deputies returned fire and wounded the shooter. Sheriff Brian VanVickle confirmed that all involved are expected to survive their injuries.
The crisis began at 8:30 a.m. when a family member reported to authorities an individual who had made both suicide and homicide threats. Despite making more than 50 attempts to contact the residents, authorities received no response. At 11:51 a.m., the emergency team decided to enter the house to check on the person's well-being. As soon as they entered, the deputies were met with gunfire and three of them were injured.
The suspect has been identified as Jonathon G. Gounaris. Armed with multiple handguns, a fixed-blade knife, pepper spray and ballistic armor, Gounaris immediately opened fire on the deputies' entrance. One deputy was shot in the body armor, another in the upper arm and the third in the face. The deputies returned fire, hitting Gounaris. All of the injured were taken to local hospitals, with two deputies later released and the third undergoing surgery at OSF St. Anthony's. Gounaris was also operated on.
The Ogle County State's Attorney's Office is currently determining what charges should be filed against Gounaris while the investigation continues.
