A large group of pro-Palestinian protesters vandalized Goldie, an Israeli-style falafel shop co-owned by Israeli chef Michael Solomonov, in Philadelphia on Sunday night, Dec. 3, 2023. Protesters surrounded the restaurant and accused Solomonov of genocide amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.
The incident was captured on video and shared by Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, who condemned the protesters' actions as “anti-Semitism.”
“A restaurant was targeted and attacked because its owner is Jewish and Israeli,” Shapiro wrote on Twitter. “This hatred and bigotry recalls a dark time in history.”
The White House also issued a statement condemning the protest, saying it was “anti-Semitic and completely unjustifiable.”
“This behavior reveals the kind of cruel and senseless double standard that is a calling card of anti-Semitism,” White House spokesman Andrew Bates said. “President Biden has fought the evil of anti-Semitism throughout his life, even launching the first national strategy to counter this hatred in American history. He will always stand firmly against these kinds of unworthy actions.” .
The protest in Philadelphia was one of several that have taken place in the city in recent weeks in response to the war between Israel and Hamas. On October 17, more than 500 people were killed in an explosion at Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in Gaza. Hamas initially blamed Israel for the attack, but the Biden administration denied that claim, saying the blast was the result of a misfired rocket fired from Gaza.
