DEI's pervasiveness throughout academia emerged at a top medical school as “opportunity,” “individualism,” and a professional dress code were all labeled facets of “white supremacy culture.”
While some schools have seen fit to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion, and states like Florida and Texas have taken legislative action to banish Marxist ideology from classrooms, others have maintained a strong commitment to Critical Race Theory and its various iterations. .
This included Duke University School of Medicine which had Fox News Digital attracted attention above its “anti-racism strategic plan” which was launched in June 2021.
Entitled “Dismantling Racism and Advancing Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in the School of Medicine”, the 42 pages document included an “18-month Priority Initiatives” that made diversity a focal point while denouncing the “culture of white supremacy” that was defined as “the idea (ideology) that white people and their ideas, thoughts, beliefs and actions of white people are superior to People of Color and their ideas, thoughts, beliefs, and actions.”
However, the description did not end there, as the plan further suggested: “In the workplace, the culture of white supremacy explicitly and implicitly privileges whiteness and discriminates against non-Western and non-white standards of professionalism related to the dress code, speech, work style, etc. and opportunity”.
“Some identifiable characteristics of this culture include perfectionism, the belief that there is only one right way, hoarding of power, individualism, a sense of urgency, and defensiveness,” the paper continues.
Duke linked to the same 2001 paper co-authored by anti-racist activist Tema Okun that the Oregon Health Authority had cited in 2020 for postponing a meeting addressing public concerns during the height of COVID because recognized “This urgency is a white supremacist value…”
As mentioned, schools like the University of Texas at Austin have it dismissed that its DEI employees meet state government expectations that prohibit divisive departments of publicly funded colleges and universities in the Lone Star State.
Meanwhile, in January 2023, Duke regained his commitment to the ideology and recognized in a update that the plan was motivated by BLM protests following the May 2020 death of George Floyd in police custody.
Vice Dean for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Kevin Thomas identified five priority areas:
- Inclusive culture
- Leadership capacity and organizational responsibility
- Longitudinal Learning
- Equitable retention and hiring practices
- Evaluation and Research
Within the plan, Dean Dr. Mary E. Klotman stated, “Our plan to dismantle racism and advance equity, diversity, and inclusion was created with an intentional and appropriate need for flexibility. All and that many of the proposed strategies will have a perennial focus, we also have short-term actions for which we are accountable, recognizing the ongoing durability of our commitments.”
“As you read this plan, consider the actions you can take individually, with your teams and in your local units to support our collective goals,” he said. “Each of you will play an important role in advancing our mission to dismantle racism and promote equity, diversity and inclusion at Duke and beyond.”
This same guide referred to the term “white fragility” coined by Robin DiAngelo as the supposed plan for unity suggested for whites and noted that “engaging in conversations about racism can trigger a range of actions, feelings and defensive behaviors, such as anger, fear, and silence. These behaviors work to restore the white racial balance.”
Although contacted by Fox News Digital for comment, the outlet said Duke did not immediately respond.
