President Mike Johnson promises a “full investigation” into Trump's assassination attempt

House Speaker Mike Johnson vowed that Congress would launch a “full investigation” into Saturday's assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

The FBI identified Thomas Matthew Crooks Sunday morning as the individual who allegedly fired at Trump, hitting the former president's ear, during the rally in Butler County, Pennsylvania. One of those attending the rally died and two others were injured.

Johnson called the assassination attempt “a horrific act of political violence” during a Sunday morning appearance on “Today.”

“Congress will conduct a full investigation of the tragedy to determine where there were safety failures,” Johnson said. published on X Sunday morning.

Republican Rep. James Comer of Kentucky, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, sent Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle a letter Saturday inviting her to testify before the commission on July 22.

“The House Oversight and Accountability Committee has opened an investigation into today's assassination attempt on President Trump and requests your voluntary appearance at a full committee hearing,” Comer wrote.

Republican Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri sent a letter Sunday to Democratic Sen. Gary Peters of Michigan, chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, to call for an investigation into the attack on Trump.

“What little we know suggests a staggering security failure,” Hawley wrote. “Obviously, the shooter was able to gain an elevated position with a clear line of sight to the president, within precise range, with a firearm.”

Johnson declined to provide additional comment beyond his “Today” appearance and a statement Saturday when contacted by the Daily Caller News Foundation. Comer and Hawley did not immediately respond to DCNF's requests for comment.
