Potential Parental Liability in Trump Assassination Attempt

The latest findings of the investigation into the attempted assassination of former President Trump have raised questions about the possible responsibility of the assailant's parents. Thomas Crooks, the would-be murderer, was a socially isolated individual whose parents could face charges if they can be shown to have knowingly aided his plan. However, proving that beyond a reasonable doubt could be challenging, according to Pennsylvania attorney Matthew Mangino.

On the other hand, civil liability is something else. A civil action against the Crooks would require proof that they could or should have intervened to protect not only the former president but also the public and the victim who died.

Thomas Crooks had apparently investigated Ethan Crumbley, the Oxford High School shooter, before his own assassination attempt. In Crumbley's case, both parents were charged and convicted of involuntary manslaughter related to their son's crimes. However, a significant difference between the two cases is Crooks' age; he was 20 years old when snipers fatally shot him during the assassination attempt.

The FBI revealed that Crooks' father was the legal owner of the AR-15 used in the shooting and had transferred ownership of it to his son before the incident. In addition, Crooks had purchased 25 firearms and six chemical precursors to materials used to create explosive devices found in his vehicle and home after the attempt. His parents claimed he had always been interested in science experiments, which explained the packages addressed to him at home.

The parents' cooperation with the FBI investigation has been noted, and there is currently no evidence to suggest that Crooks worked with any conspirators. However, if it is revealed that the AR-15 was transferred to Crooks illegally or with knowledge of its intended use, criminal charges or civil claims could be filed. At this time, there is no information linking anyone else to the attack or indicating that her parents were aware of her plans.

The investigation is ongoing and officials are still working to determine Crooks' motive in the assassination attempt against Trump.
