Popular 'Edgars' haircut linked to crime, sparking calls to ban those rocking 'gang-influenced' style

A stigmatized style sparked a spat on social media over the correlation between crime in Texas and “people who just got that same haircut.”

“…you're basically banning all Mexican teenagers.”

On April 28, a shootout between two suspects at the Fiesta De Los Reyes in San Antonio, Texas left five people injured and those responsible dead. Micky Valdez, 18, who was pronounced dead at the scene after officers shot him, was reportedly wearing an “Edgar Cut”, renewing calls to ban the style “influenced by affiliation to bands”.

Shortly after the incident, San Antonio restaurateur Ricky Ortiz, who owns El Camino, posted a picture on social media of the hairstyle streaked in red over the words “NO EDGARS” with the caption: “We must enforce a policy without a bowl of chili.” ?”

He also posted on the day of the incident: “The market square is what the carnival was. The party committee needs to shut everything down, charge a cover and have a policy without Edgar. A good portion of the people d 'this city is absolute [garbage]. Make it unaffordable for them to even attend.”

The shots drew a strong backlash, including comments such as: “I hope you have the day you deserve” and “a no edgar policy is crazy, you're basically banning all Mexican teenagers.”

Although Ortiz was not the first person to suggest such a ban, the attention his public appeal got him defending his position in the Current of San Antonio, “People who accuse me of racism are speaking from a place of ignorance. They don't want to acknowledge or admit that most of the kids who are getting these haircuts want to be in a culture that is influenced by gang affiliation and things like that.”

He even went so far as to admit to the Current that he himself was involved in “hood shit” as a teenager when he also sported the hairstyle sooner rather than later. affirming on KSAT, “It was just a joke.”

However, many agreed with Ortiz and he commented in the original post with takes like “Yes please!!!!! This should apply everywhere…” and “I personally wouldn't want my boys in middle school getting haircuts of Edgar”.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, the person behind the Instagram account @therealfitfamElPaso expressed“Especially in El Paso, we've had a lot of crimes that were committed by people who just had that same haircut.”

“Where we are now, we correlate these guys as bad guys, even though there are a lot of good men with the same cut,” the social media account administrator added.

While disagreeing on where the style originated, aol.com previously attributed the hairstyle's name to former Seattle Mariners third baseman Edgar Martinez.

In addition to recent calls to remove the haircut, the Mail noted that students at El Paso's Riverside High School had started a petition to ban the “Edgar Cut,” calling it a dress code violation. because of its detrimental effects on our education, as it causes distractions, antagonizes the general student population, and has immediately become a general nuisance.”

His 2021 effort ended in failure, two years before Texas Gov. Greg Abbot signed the CROWN Act, which bans discrimination in housing, education and employment based on hair textures and styles .
